Dreaming about a beach picnic?! With Langkawi’s dreamlike coastline and the delicacies available at the Duty Free Turkish Bazaar - a fantasy you can easily turn into reality while here on holidays!

A resident expat and occasionally frustrated by the island’s limited choices of groceries? You will be delighted by the great selection of freshly baked bread, cheese, mouth-watering dips and delicious sweets, and certainly appreciate the shopping experience itself! A spotless air-conditioned space, neatly stacked shelves, inviting displays and an opportunity to sample prior to making a purchase… Where else on the island do you get that :-)

Located in Pantai Tengah, just ten minutes walk from the vibrant Cenang Beach, the shop is run by the Turkish expat Ata whose Istanbul Restaurant has a loyal following among Langkawi residents as well as returning tourists. Praised for the rich, authentic flavor of his dishes, he replicated the success formula when opening the Turkish Bazaar by singlehandedly selecting all products to make sure they are of the highest quality!

Whether on holidays or living in Langkawi, there is nothing like starting your day with a freshly roasted Turkish or Arabic coffee, a crispy slice of bread straight from the oven, coated in butter and your favorite jam! A fan of apricot, peach or sour cherry marmalade? Or how about a strawberry jam with whole berries in it? Whatever your preference, the selection is huge, including even exotic choices such as jam made of black or white fig! And if you love honey - get ready. There are so many options to choose from, it’s likely to take a while until you make up your mind.

If you are planning a picnic, you will want to fill your basket with original Turkish feta, the famous akkawi or haloumi cheese, old cheddar or the delicious Turkish candil. And whether you choose the round Turkish village bread, lavas, pide or the traditional white bread - freshly baked and dipped in home-made hummus, baba ganoush or the spicy ezme - it’s such a treat, you will regret not to have bought more! A lover of stuffed grape leaves? Of course, they are available! And don’t forget to get also some sun dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, pickled cornichons and green olives stuffed with garlic!

Of course, you can impossibly leave without adding some delicious sweets! If you like it natural, opt for dates, dried figs or apricots. Although… Once you sample the home-made baklava that comes in many variations, it’s unlikely you can resist.

Made of layers of phyllo dough soaked with melted butter, held together with rich honey and garnished with chopped walnuts, hazelnuts and pistachios, the traditional Ottoman Empire pastry is a true revelation! And yes. Tahini Halva with pistachios and the famous Turkish Delight are available, too. So there you go. Spoilt for choice and expected to make up your mind again :-)

If you are passionate about cooking, explore the isle on the right. You will find a great variety of olive oil from extra virgin to bottles flavored with basil. Available is also the famous pomegranate sauce and a myriad of oriental spices.

Recently added, there is also a lovely section with souvenirs and home accessories. Whether an ornamental coaster, a beautiful wind-light or traditional Turkish lamps and chandeliers made of copper and colourful pieces of glass - they make wonderful gifts for your loved ones back home.

While small in size, the Duty Free Turkish Bazaar offers a great selection of delicious products and if you start sampling, the whole shopping experience may take a while. But there is no need to worry about your hubby getting impatient :-)

Just ‘park him’ at the shop’s outdoor terrace and have him enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Arabic coffee or the famous Turkish apple tea and a shisha with grape, apple or mint flavored tobacco. Wanna bet, he won’t mind if you take your time?!
