The Langkawi Dolphin Project

The Langkawi Dolphin Research Team is on the lookout for porpoises, dolphins and whales! Among the species that have been sighted thus far is the Finnless porpoise, Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphin and the Bryde’s Whale (pronounced broo-ders).

Our project is quite new. We are 2 of us who are running it, but we engage volunteers to assist us in every survey trip that we undertake. Our group size per trip varies from 4 to 6 people.  We started our work in Langkawi in October 2010, and hope to continue long into the future.

We are seeking YOUR help in providing information on any dolphin/whale sightings and/or strandings around Langkawi waters. This information helps us better understand these magnificent creatures’ distribution and conservation needs. So, whenever you’re out on the water, walking along a beach or standing at a jetty looking out into the yonder - keep your eyes peeled for these marine animals. We would appreciate any details of such sightings, along with photographs or video clips. Please send them to langkawidolphinresearch@gmail.com.

You can follow the team’s activity’s and learn more about Langkawi’s marine mammals on Facebook! Thank you!
