PrintE-mail Visited by a Baby-Snake

Snake in MalaysiaMark: 30 July 2010
Updated with 2 funny pics from a reader !
Click on 'read more'.

While sitting before my computer, I suddenly saw behind the curtain of a window something long and blackish falling to the floor: a cute little baby-snake found a hole somewhere - may be a not properly closed window - and came to visit me.

Snake in LangkawiCan anybody tell me
what kind of snake this is?

Despite cheking lot of pictures on the NET - I was not able to define it. It looks similar to the Mangrove Snake (equal 'Goldringed Cat Snake' ?) - but the body is not black, but brown and the lower side of the head is not yellow. And it has a signature on the head. So - can anybody help? Is it a baby form? Is it safe to touch ? (If you are nor registered, just use 'contact' to tell me.) Thanks.

John, living on Langkawi,  sent me the following pictures of 'his' snake, which is a bit bigger, with the following comment:

 Pythons love music . . .

 Pythons love beer . . .

Hai Mark,
The Snake that did visit you is a nonvenomous snake and it has already adult size. From my experience this snake eats small geckos - try to find gecko in your house. In the book 'Fascinating Snake of Southeast Asia' that snake is called 'House @ Wolf Snake'.

Thanks a lot. Yes in between we came to the same conclusion, but were not sure...
Here is an article with a picture and it looks exactly the same:

The little snake is indeed very aggressive despite of its size!Cute !

Yes, it is a nonvenomous snake, local people call it 'ular air' = water snake.

Thanks John !

Hi Mark
your snake is a Dryocalamus subannulatus. In German: Gebaenderte Zuegelnatter.
She lives mostly in trees/forests in the flatlands. Eats frogs and lizards. Length around 60 cm.
She is nonvenomous.
Peter

Belated THANKS, Peter by Mark on 30 Aug 2010, 6:51 pm

I guess you mean 'Gebänderte Züngelnatter'. I could not verify this - very little about this name in the internet and no pictures.
I still believe the right name here is 'Wolfsnake'.
