LANGKAWI O' LANGKAWI By Dr. Mahathir Mohamad on May 17 2010 1. I used to sail in the Mediterranean sea and visited the islands there. They were all very bare. There were a few trees growing in between bare rocks. 2. Coming back I appreciated our green islands more. And the greenest of them all (to me at least) is Langkawi. 3. But I am afraid it is getting less and less green now. 4. We like to blame the developers for cutting down the tree. And I think they should be blamed. But in Langkawi we see people, mostly locals I think, who quietly burn down the undergrowth and sometimes the trees as well, so they can plant bananas and other fruit trees. They do this on the hillsides normally. 5. As a result when it rains, muddy water which used to be trapped and the flow slowed by the bushes now come down in torrents. 6. If the hillsides continue to be cleared, there will be landslides soon. 7. A Langkawi that is not green won't be much of an attraction, I think. 8. My blog seems to have some effect. The straightening and widening of the north south highway, as well as the cutting of trees have now stopped. All praise be to Allah. Thank you JKR. 9. I had lunch on the rocks at Tanjung Sanctuary. This is an old hotel but the new owner has completely refurbished. No trees were cut and you pass through a real forest to reach the chalets and the restaurant. 10. I was there when the hotel was started almost 20 years ago. This was my second visit and the ambience is fantastic. Very restful. 11. O Langkawi - may it always be green. In my years as Prime Minister nothing gave me so much pleasure as developing Langkawi. It still gives me the same pleasure. Yes. And it happens a bit everywhere. I live in Kisap, in a region with houses between forest. Around me three places were 'cleared' ... lately. At thye moment we still have a lot of birds and animals around - but it will certainly become less and less....
plant more trees in Kuah by zuraidah zainal abidin on 25 May 2010, 12:56 pm
I live in LGK for the past 18 years. This is my home now and I want this beautiful island to stay green. Please plant more trees in Kuah especially town area. The car park in front of Maybank should have more trees as shade for human abd animals. If you go to town at noon, it is like in an oven. Also the council should plant trees in front of the traffic light, opposite old shophouse, there is a project like Menara LGK, meanwhile plant more trees along the beach & put benches so people could sit & enjoy the view and provide more green to town. MPL, please be environment active.
Trees by Mark on 27 May 2010, 12:25 pm
What they first have to do, is to understand that they should not take more trees down. LADA gave a very bad example when they took down the very very old and huge, beutiful trees in front of the now Pekan Rabu. This was a shame.
And then they continued with taking down all the trees along the road going out of Kuah in the direction of Kisap (or the Hole in the Wall). That was an other big mistake IMO. And completely unnecessary.
The road, now very large, gets still blocked any time the School is out, and on both sides one lane is simply used to park the waiting cars. And of course - this was clear from the beginning - the 'Passerelle' over the street is not used by a single student...

How I wish..... by zuraidah zainal abidin on 31 May 2010, 2:44 pm
It was in 1995 when I was teaching in this school. There was a big field with jsut a few trees and shrubs near the hostel. It is not a football field, just a landscape. I suggested to plant fruit trees like rambutan, mangos so that evryone including animals can benefit form the flowers, fruits to the shade. Well, the warden was against it. He said then he will have problems with students climbing all over the tress. So I just dropped the idea. Now whenever I pass that place & saw the bare field I felt guilty & regretted my decision. I am no longer a part of the organisation. I should have done something back then. If I had pursued the matter, now 15 years is a long time, imagine how it would be now.So, I kept thinking..How I wish.. How I wish.. So now if you out there have an idea or project for the environment, just do it. Do not wait for another 15 years. Let us all support MNS Langkawi chapter & plant more trees. We cannot wait for the council. We do it ourselves. What say you?

Langkawi O Langkawi by Farid Sani on 22 May 2010, 10:01 am
Dear Tun,
Langkawi is a nice island for people visit. I am fortunate to be able to have dealings with mariners from all over the world. They come from USA, Canada, NZ, Aust etc to go to the Mediterranean and they have a choice of Langkawi or Phuket as their last stop to repair, resupply with food and fuel before their onward journey to the Red Sea/Africa. They much prefer Langkawi to Phuket but Langkawi do not have the support that they require. Why can't Langkawi be developed as a yacht haven? This will develop the supporting industries, sailing skills as well as promotion for Langkawi because these yacht owners are a very tight group and they communicate with each other. As for the farmers, provide them with a dedicated island for growing food to supply Langkawi. This could also be a tourist attraction.
I love what you have done to Langkawi.
