What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability, an inherited condition, that makes it extremely difficult to read, write, and spell in your native language — despite at least average intelligence.
(Exact definition see here )
How does it show?
Sometimes highly intelligent children fail miserably in school for no apparent reason. In the past children had to be assessed by an educational psychologist in KL (a rather expensive undertaking).
They will then probably find out, that the student sees “words and numbers jumbled up on a page and has trouble telling left from right . …..They also often keep getting the alphabets p, b, d and q constantly mixed up….”
What help is now available in Langkawi?
In March this year a group of frustrated Langkawi parents formed a committee for dyslexia. With the help from the “Persatuan Dyslexia Malaysia” (PDM) in KL - persatuan =association - they managed to setup a special school “that trains dyslexic children how to read and write.”
