Ex Rainforest - Langkawi GazetteMNS Langkawi launches the

'Save Langkawi's Rainforest and Wildlife'

petition:

Venue:   Langkawi Fair
Date:      1st of May 2010
Time :    12pm - 5pm

Please come and sign. We need your
valuable support to make it a success.

Background :
Why We Need to Save Langkawi’s Rainforest.

Langkawi is truly blessed with a rich and diverse range of habitat types. Tourists do not flock to Langkawi just for the lovely beaches, nice resorts and the charming locals. Our most important attraction is the island’s natural heritage: its geological sites and the flora and fauna of our precious rain forests. Increasingly, ecotourism has become the island main economic cash cow. Today we can safely say that over 80 percent of the islanders are directly or indirectly employed in tourism: hoteliers, boat operators, airport personnel, taxis drivers, tourist guides, dive operators, restaurant workers and many others.

Without doubt, the rainforest is very important to the island’s economy. Imagine what would happen to tourism if we clear cut all the forests in Langkawi. Lest we forget, the rainforest provides many important functions. It stores rainwater and releases it in increments that allows the fruit, vegetable and rice farmers to tap its waters and successful grow their crops. The natural environment of Langkawi has come to a very important crossroad and the native residents, tourism players and other stakeholders must decide its future direction. If we continue to treat the environment without any boundaries we will eventually pay a heavy price. The writing is already on the wall. We have been experiencing flash floods, drought conditions, and a big decline in our air and water quality in just the last few years. Please help to ensure the survival of Langkawi’s remaining forests.

Don’t throw garbage in the forest. Don’t set forest fires. Help us protest against development of virgin rain forest and let’s all go plant some trees. "Yes the island is at a very important crossroad and at stake is our quality of life and economic future. The future of this beautiful and beloved island home of ours is in our very hands. We must make the necessary changes, we cannot afford to see the lost of any more precious rainforest especially by land speculators that want to clear cut protected forest in the hope of selling it later on for a quick profit. These few speculators are selling our future and the future of our children.

Irshad Mobarak MNS Langkawi chairman.

BYOB by zuraidah zainal abidin on 28 Apr 2010, 12:45 pm

On 1st May 2010 at Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall Kelab Amal Wanita Langkawi & the management of Langkawi Fair is organizing Earth day & No Plastic Day. Please bring Your Own Bag (BYOB). The booths will not give you any plastic bags. However, there will be plenty of recycle bags that you can get at RM 4 a piece. Use it at all times when you go out shopping etc.
PLEASE HELP REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF PLASTIC RUBBISH IN LANGKAWI.

I seems that the past two years have come with more and more cutting.

What government agency should patrol these forests to make sure that public land is not being cut?

I think the petition should ask the appropriate government leaders/agencies to do something- enforce TOL land use rules- limit the elevation for forest cutting (I believe that Phuket has just set new rules for this)- make certain areas "untouchable".

Of course if the petition lies on dusty desks, then it is our duty as "keepers of this creation" to keep up the pressure.

Please sign this petition- seems the best way to let the higher-ups know that we the people notice what is going on.

SAVE LANGKAWI'S BEAUTIFUL RAINFOREST AND WILDLIFES!

Where was the petition by Lee Johnson on 03 May 2010, 12:21 am

I went to the mall at about 4pm but I could not find this petition anywhere. Anyway, Irshad, could you get in touch with me please. I have a few ideas I would like to discuss with you.

Hi Lee, by Mark on 03 May 2010, 2:44 pm

Then you are either blind - which you would know - or you were in the wrong Mall.
Langkawi Fair - was the place. The one between Kuah and the Jetty Point... :-)
I was there and Irshad personally welcomed everyone and explained the facts :-), they had a very well prepared booth and a lot of lists ready to signe and I was very positively surprised about their professionality in putting this up. Well done Irshad!!
In regard to contacting Irshad I suggest you email him directly to:

some I missed it by Lee Johnson on 03 May 2010, 2:48 pm

I was certainly at the right mall. Found the Kelab Amal Wanita Langkawi table no problem and even bought a save-the-turtle t-shirt from another stall.

Anyway, somehow I miss this one, but glad to hear that it went so well. :-)

I will be in touch directly.

Cheers,

Lee

Hi Lee by Mark on 03 May 2010, 3:04 pm

Then let me help you solve the mystery: They were positioned right behind the big carved wooden thing in the hall of the main entry. So if you came in through the main entry you could indeed miss them if you would not look to the side - but in going out through the main entrance - coming from the main hall - you would not have missed them...
Cheers

Lee

Perhaps the mystery is solved.

I think the guys had to pack up by 4pm so that Irshad could move on to Datai to conduct his evening walk.

Anyway, it seemed like they collected hundreds of signatures.

Autsch . . . by Mark on 06 May 2010, 11:38 am

I told you I could nearly not believe how professional all this was done - so they had obviously to end it early and not stay until 5pm as they had announced to keep up with the islands casual style of life... lol
