PrintE-mail A Wish List for Langkawi

Mark:  11 April 2010

What Langkawi needs most:

There was just a discussion about the Langkawi Hospital on the Trip Advisor (see here) , where several negative experiences were mentioned. Major medical problems after an accident had not been detected. And we still have the situation, that people have to be transported to Penang or Alostar for urgent operations after an accident, and this by FERRY (up to 4 hours!).

“ . . . i agree with the recent comments in the star newspaper that Langkawi has a first class hospital but third rate staff . . . most qualified staff especially doctors will not work in Langkawi because of the education problem for their children (ie no international school) unlike Penang and the mainland."  (jonboy).

I would like to formulate a Wish List for Langkawi:

Langkawi needs:

1. Better qualified Hospital Staff
2. An Emergency Helicopter
3. An International School
4. Public Transport

I would appreciate to get some comments.

Transport to mainland by Jeku on 12 Apr 2010, 6:16 pm

Langkawi would really need a real car ferry. We went last December with our local friends to Penang for a few days and in order to get their car to the mainland they had to take it the day before to the cargo harbour from where it was transported to Kuala Kedah with the cargo barge. When we the following day arrived in K. Kedah, the barge was not discharged yet, so we waited a couple of hours in the cargo harbour there before we got the car. The harbour in K. Kedah is something of the most chaotic I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of harbours in my life. The “road” to the jetty is built in the shape of an “S” instead of leading straight from point A to point B, and large lorries are parked everywhere.

Thanks Jeku ! by Mark on 12 Apr 2010, 7:32 pm

LOL - yes I know the place in Kuala Kedah.... I once transported a motor bike to Langkawi. In Langkawi they lost the key (keys go in a basket on the desk and anyone just takes his key - or what he thinks is his key....) - and as it was a used bike which I just bought, I had no spare key... So after searching for it by a dozen people with no success, my motor bike had to be put on a lorry and brought to a chinese shop that could make a spare key...
I understand your request.
On the other side, Langkawi has allready 4times too many cars, because there is no public transport, because the taxi driver are against it.
We are an Oeko-Island for Taxi Drivers. They develop really well here... LOL

Transport by Robert on 15 Apr 2010, 4:55 pm

I have noticed a few new bus shelters built around the island, could this mean that Langkawi will finally get a public bus service ?

Hi Robert, by Mark on 16 Apr 2010, 9:18 pm

Sorry for my late answer.
And for the negative answer... :-((
These Bus shelters are for the schoolbusses of the children only. As I was told.
If you are a bit more optimistic - we could see a scenario, where the people renting these shelters to sell sweets etc. would outnumber the taxidrivers and then - who know's - we would have a chance to get a public transport...lol

This is what Langkawi really needs by Spilornis on 17 Apr 2010, 9:41 pm

1. Natural History Museum!

2. Passionate, genuine and cannot be bribed Perhutanan (Forestry department, Perhilitan (Wildlife Department)and Marine law enforcers

3. No more LADA = no more development.

Hi Spilornis by Mark on 17 Apr 2010, 11:01 pm

Yes, I can understand your view point!

The Natural History Museeum should at the same time be an Int.Institute as Prof. Bernard d'Abrera explained it - which would create working places for scientists and BRING money to Langkawi and be a good purpose - and give us international reputation (and perhaps could make something useful out of the Book Village).

See the article in Community Info/Environment - 3rd article.
Re LADA: LADA not only works on the development on Langkawi as far as I know, but is also organising promotion abroad. Which is probably necessary.
Beside that there are a lot of empty houses and unfinished projects in Langkawi - so there is still enough to care for. If such an Int. Institute of Natural History should come - someone has to organise things.... Just - you are right - we do not need any BIG developments anymore IMO. One can too easy develop something to death.

speed limits by Vanessa Lynn Workman on 29 Apr 2010, 9:03 am

I think it would be a good thing to not be surrounded by speeding cars and scooters. Not only is it noisy its so friggin' dangerous. Honestly if they gave traffic tickets in Langkawi they would get lots of revenue and save some lives.

natural history museum by kawifan on 29 Apr 2010, 12:17 pm

Spilomis,

I agree- a natural history museum/ international research center is an interesting idea for Langkawi.

Think of the unique species that have already been located in Langkawi- and imagine the additions that would come if we give the world's biologists and scientists a center with lodging and workspace.

Car Ferry by Derek Peter Nesbit on 29 Apr 2010, 12:25 pm

The last thing the island needs is a car ferry.

Hi Derek by Mark on 29 Apr 2010, 1:10 pm

I agree. Or a bridge to the mainland .... :-((

What Langkawi really needs. by J. Winum on 29 Apr 2010, 1:19 pm

A dedicated car ferry would never be able to compete with the low costs of tug/barge combination, so do not fear!

What LGK really need are less failed shop house projects, better maintained pedestrian walks in town, some are downright dangerous if one does not know where the holes are, less littering, an efficient garbage collection service, traffic police on the roads but I'm dreaming.......!

Speed Limits by Mark on 29 Apr 2010, 1:24 pm

I fully understand you. I am horrified by the amount of deadly accident on this island.
I have a friend who works in the Datai. Within the last year he told me about 3 deadly accidents which happened around the datei. And I am sure, he missed a few.... Just 1 week ago a Malay was killed on the road there because a car overtaking and coming to the wrong side...
But I am not sure at all writing tickets would help much. It's not only the speed - which is of course one problem - it's also people not looking, not thinking 2 seconds ahead. I had 3 accidents because of exactly this. people suddeenly deciding to turn from one side of the road to the other without looking! Plus I witnessed exactly that, being done by a taxi recently. A wonder the biker he caught was not dead. He is perhaps only paralised for the rest of his life. It's indeed unbelievable what's happening here. I guess we have about 3times more deadly accidents than any spot in the western world.....
How to change that ???
Mark

Hi J. by Mark on 29 Apr 2010, 1:29 pm

It is already a good thing when we can dream loudly....
Because this "pscht, don't say anything negative about Langkawi" is NOT helpful in the long run.
:-))

Education by Katja Penders on 05 May 2010, 3:59 pm

The best gift of all is education.

Above all else, Langkawi needs a better environmental education starting with the children.

All by Sharlene Khor on 23 May 2010, 8:33 am

wow, they all sound good :)
Yes better qualified Hospital Staff.
Emergency Helicopters would be nice.
An International School sounds definately awesome!
Public Transport, BUSES! I always catch the bus in Australia :)
