PrintE-mail The Sad Story about the 'Langkawi Events' 2010

Mark: 14 March 2010

In the past years LADA organised nearly a dozen events every year and published a list of Events in the beginning of the year on
http://www.lada.gov.my/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=74&Itemid=84
(The website has no translation into English).

This seems to have changed.
The LADA website is not updated anymore in re to Langkawi Events.
(There are still the 2009 Events listed).

Searching for Langkawi Events on the NET brings up the
http://www.tourism.gov.my/en/events/default.asp
and the only event listed under Langkawi is:

--------------------------------------------------------

Langkawi Water Stage Show
6 - 8 August 2010

Text:
"Visit the beautiful island of Langkawi and enjoy enthralling performances and stage shows. Be enchanted by the colourful displays that will make your holiday even more exciting. Don’t miss the chance to visit Langkawi’s beautiful beaches during this magical event! "

Venue:
Pantai Cenang
Langkawi
Phone: 04-966 7186
Fax: 04-966 2879
Website: www.lada.gov.my
(Wrong: this website doesn't say anything about this event.)

Organiser:
Ministry of Tourism
Phone: 03-2693 7111
Fax: 03-2691 3358
Email: info@motour.gov.my
Website: www.motour.gov.my
(Wrong: this website doesn't say anything about this event.)

With this description of course nobody can imagine what is going or not going to happen.

-----------------------------

Going through the list month by month, there is a 2nd event which can be found to take place in Langkawi:

Langkawi Water Festival
10 – 12 Apr (Pantai Cenang, Langkawi)

Cool the tropical heat with some water sports. Enjoy jet ski races, parasailing, kayaking, yachting, boat rides and many more at the following events:

Kedah State Office,
Ministry of Tourism
T: 04-735 1030
F: 04-732 7914

Venue:
Pantai Cenang, Langkawi

Phone: 03-2693 7111
Fax: 03-2691 3358
Email: info@motour.gov.my
Website: www.motour.gov.my

And so far - that's it for 2010 in regard to special Langkawi Events.

Event Calender by Yang Razlan on 22 Mar 2010, 5:28 am

This is the sad truth of Malaysia' s tourism industry. I am not surprise if Langkawi have not finalized its event calender for 2010 because of politics. And the same in most other states besides Sabah & Sarawak and Melaka.Pathetic thats all to it.And those involve in tourism are not fit to look into the department, most of them have not clue at all what is tourism.

Hi Yang Razlan by Mark on 22 Mar 2010, 10:28 pm

Thanks for your comment.
Yes - it would be nice if politics could be kept out of the things where both sides in fact agree upon the basics, like nurtering the tourism industry on Langkawi.
Still there is a glimmer of hope: LADA still has a Tourism Manager, and this is 'Megat' (Megat Shahrul Azman Bin Abas) and he speaks English well and has a good grasp on the necessity for a sustainable tourism industry. (On the LADA Government website there are only 2 persons listed for the Tourism Department in total:
BTW: There is also a Geopark Department which cares about Information, Research, Monitoring and Enforcement, 'Chemical Earth', and Forest Conservation.
Things might just take some time and settle in again ?? :-)
