The NEW ARTS CAFE
in Langkawi Fair
Belinda Koh, the beautiful owner of the place - an experienced business woman and courageous entrepreneur - is in Langkawi Fair since eleven years. She has originally learned her trade in a Swiss 'Hotelfachschule' - and being an artist herself - she is the perfect person to create an ARTS CAFE that is more than just a 'normal business'.
She obviously likes what she is doing. The walls are full of colorful paintings from local artists - with only a few tables inside, creating an inviting open space. In future this space can be used for artists doing their painting there, making music or having a book reading, a birthday party (of artists or 'normal' people), etc., etc. The cafe has sliding doors toward the mall which can be closed for a private event if necessary.

Editor’s Viewpoint – some thoughts about the Langkawi Gazette
Yesterday in the DOMINO in Kuah, I met an older Expat who is around here since a long time. He told me, that the Langkawi Gazette was a bit boring for him. He is not interested in SPA’s and ‘Trendy Restaurant’s’ (he doesn’t go to SPA’s and has found his favourite eating places already) – and what he misses, is news about ‘what is happening in Langkawi’ and with this he includes accidents, the death of an Expat and things like that – in short: Community News.

Constantly looking for exciting ways to surprise and delight their guests, THE DATAI, Langkawi’s legendary beach and rainforest resort, invites as a guest Chef the CULINARY CELEBRITY, ANTON MOSIMANN.
Regarded the founder of ‘Cuisine Naturelle’, a culinary style highlighting the flavors of individual ingredients, Anton Mosimann earned the famous Dorchester two Michelin Stars, and became famous by opening Mosimann’s, a celebrated Private Dining Club in London. He catered for four British Prime Ministers, four US Presidents and most of Europe’s Heads of State, and was chosen to delight with his culinary art guests attending the grand reception of Prince William’s wedding at Buckingham Palace.

I am please to announce the official launch of my ebook,
The Backpacker's Guide to Langkawi.
For the last couple of years, marketing and promotions by the tourism industry here have been targeting mid-budget to upscale luxury travellers while hardly any effort has been made to provide useful information to backpackers and other low-budget travellers.
As a result, most backpackers going through SE Asia these days believe this island too expensive and are skipping Langkawi for Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
The Backpacker's Guide to Langkawi will hopefully bring this group of vital tourists back to these shores. This lavishly-illustrated 60-page ebook is stuffed with money-saving tips for flights, dining, do-it-yourself tours, shopping and much more. Also included are detailed directories of budget hotels, safety tips, maps and an activities list sorted according to personality and travel style. At only $7.95 USD, this book will pay for itself many times over.
BERBUKA PUASA CELEBRATION

Ramadan. Time of contemplation, spiritual renewal and worship... Celebrated during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar in which Quran was revealed by angel Gabriel to the prophet Muhammad, Muslims all over the world retreat to reflect upon the holy words of Allah sent for the guidance of humanity.
The Ramadan is also a time of purification and practice of self-discipline. Turning away from worldly pleasures, Muslims follow from dawn to sunset sawm - a religious fast aiming at cleansing the body, mind and soul.

GRAND OPENING AT WAKABA
By Kamila Delart
Located on the second floor of the new Cenang Shopping Mall, the Japanese Restaurant Wakaba invited on Sunday, August 5th more than 100 guests to celebrate Grand Opening.
The Japanese owner, Mr. Masaki Nonomiya, is passionate about serving authentic traditional dishes of his home land. Created by a Japanese Chef, and utilizing the freshest ingredients available, the buffet with a variety of sushi, sashimi and other Japanese delicacies was excellent!

The Global Spa Culture -
THE SPAS OF THE FUTURE
“The spa industry is currently the fastest growing segment of the hospitality and leisure industry with revenues exceeding those from amusement parks, box office receipts, vacation ownership gross sales and ski resort ticket sales.”
This is the second in a series of blogs based on conversations between Dr. Gerry Bodeker and Paul Penders
Hello, you may like to put this following message in your Gazette.
I am a Canadian tourist visiting Langkawi for the third time. I have always felt safe & find the Malaysian people very friendly & helpful.
Sunday evening (1st July) around 8:30 pm walking on the street by the park North of Langkawi Faires shopping mall, a motorcycle with one man on it came from the playground parking area on to the street in front of me and snatched a small bag I was wearing round my neck as he passed me. Fortunately, it contained only my cell phone.
In future I shall not walk alone after dark. I hope this will be a warning to other tourists.
Thank you Jane for letting us know. We are sorry this happened to you, it creates such a frustration when sometthing so unjust happens! Luckily these things are not common here, as you know - but obviously possible. I myself - being here since more than 10 years - always wear a belly bag and feel safe with that and never had a problem. It's probably the safest way to go. Mark.

HOTSPOT FOR BACKPACKERS
By Kamila Delart
Barely open, TUBOTEL in Langkawi became the hottest insider tip among budget travelers! A grand weekend getaway for the young and hip from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hongkong, and a cool place to spend holidays when backpacking from Europe and Australia, the unique hotel concept created a major stir.
Inspired by the Austrian ‘Park Hotel', designed by the architect Andy Strauss, TUBOTEL features futuristic barrel-like rooms made of giant drainage pipes, painted in various pastel colors. Going with the minimalist trend, the rooms with a diameter of 2.5 x 2.5 meter forego the bells and whistles, sticking to basics: king-size bed with ample storage underneath, comfy bedding, fan and a reading lamp. Full-size glass front provides an amazing view of the Andaman Sea, and a Sunset to die for!
A Langkawian falls in love with a green hotel - sorry, no - it is not one of ours - it is in Sri Lanka. Why we write about? Some of the hotels and resorts in Langkawi could use it as an example . . .
Have I Finally Found the Truly Perfect Hotel?
By Paul Penders
On the last day of my visit to Sri Lanka, I was met with a most wonderful surprise: a hotel of real quality that ‘walks its talk’ – the Jetwing Beach Hotel in Negombo.
My work has me traveling quite often. In over 40 years of travel, I may have stayed in perhaps a thousand hotels all over the world. Each hotel has its own specialty, character or uniqueness, and the experience can very good but it also can quite bad! I have learned that even if it is part of a big chain -- like for example, Hilton Hotels – that does not always guarantee a pleasant stay. Same goes for a huge price tag as well. I have also stayed in numerous small family hotels and most of them gave me a wonderful experience for an affordable price. However, out of them all, this one is the closest to a perfect hotel.

fatCUPID @ La Pari-Pari
NEW BOUTIQUE HOTEL AND RESTAURANT
by Kamila Delart
A group of friends and selected guests were invited to celebrate the launch of La Pari - Pari, a new boutique hotel and the resident Restaurant fatCUPID. Hidden behind the Sun Block in Pantai Tengah and surrounded by nature, the place has a quiet, relaxing atmosphere. The 12 rooms are built around a patio with beautiful old trees and a small swimming pool. Rates start at RM 275 with 20% discount until the end of April.
The restaurant is run by three cousins who share passion for food. Selecting the name fatCUPID, the owners are determined to prove the theory that ‘once struck by cupid’s arrow, you will fall instantly in love’ - trusting that once their guest taste the casual Australian cuisine, they will keep coming back for more. With fun atmosphere, delicious culinary creations of Keith Ng, the restaurant’s Chef, and Jeremy Liew’s friendly service, their vision could become quickly a reality. Although part of the La Pari-Pari hotel, the restaurant is open to public. Curious? Give it a try and if love-struck, post a like on their facebook: facebook.com/fatcupidlangkawi

The sad story of the factual closing
of the best beach of Langkawi:
by the Tanjung Rhu Resort
Letter to the Langkawi Gazette
I want to tell you about my adventures with Tanjung Rhu.
One day i came there 5.30 and i was not allowed to go on the beach.
After 5 your not permitted to go on the beach??
What about the nice sunset??
Other time I went with my daughter and children about two o'clock.
We went on the beach and I was shocked to see the fence.
We sad down and then this guard came and said we have to move.
We were sitting about 5 meter next to the fence and this guy said we can not because we need space when there is a emergency at the resort beach.
So they take the beach and turned it into a prison.

These prices are: Children (2-12 years old) RM 20 (MyKad Holder RM 10.00 )
Adults RM 30 (My Kad Holder RM 15.00 )
The DOMINO Restaurant in Kuah, in a new look
Can you remember the old 'Domino" with the filthy green carpet on the floor?
Dee, the new owner, has transformed it step by step into a nice, fresh and friendly place. This and Western Food specialities, like his famous 'Shepherd's Pie' and many others, together with the fact, that he charges only moderate prices, are the reason that his restaurant is doing very well these days.... This is not a paid advertisement, but a thank you to Dee from me, one of his frequent customers. Mark

Whatever comes to your mind when picturing the perfect holidays - some sweet indulgence has to be part of it!
‘La douceur de vivre’ - ‘The sweet life’ as the French call it, becomes reality the moment you step in the atmospheric
LA CHOCOLATINE. The French Pâtisserie, Salon de Thé, and Bistrot may have opened only a year ago, but a random passersby will show you the way. That is - if he doesn’t decide on the spot to walk you over - looking for an excuse to allow himself a little treat…
Tourism industry concerned by lack of action on beachfront abuse, safety and upkeep of island
THE authorities may like to think of it as "Langkawi Permata Kedah" (Langkawi the pearl of Kedah), but the goings-on at some of the major attractions on the island are putting off visitors.
Even the people involved in the tourism sector have voiced concern that the island's allure as a premier destination was going downhill as reflected in the many negative comments posted on tripadvisor.com.
Wildlife Murders In Langkawi
Of all the diurnal primates found on Langkawi, they are the shiest and gentle among all. They usually mind their own business and take off when you get close to them. Their shyness and gentleness are the unique traits that draw other primates to admire them and perhaps getting as near as possible to shoot them - with cameras.
This particular gentle diurnal primate is one our island's wildlife attraction, the Dusky Langur (Trachypithecus obscurus), which mostly can be found at the edge of the rainforest, in plantations or even nearby housing estates.
THE BEAUTY OF LANGKAWI
By Kamila Delart
It was love at first sight. Pristine island surrounded by the turquoise Andaman Sea, ancient rainforest with trees rooted in the depth of thousands of years, and their branches daringly reaching towards the sky. Bright orange of wild heliconias, and deep red of the ginger flowers. The tantalizing smell of a jackfruit in the air…
As per definition, ‘Love at first sight’ is the phenomenon of an instant attraction, inexplicable romantic feelings bordering on madness… A description implying that this state of sensory intoxication is far too intense as that it could last.

Small Habits That Create A Better World
Compare a happy R&D of a small natural cosmetics company with a happy gathering of local youngsters. The R&D play in our labs and local children play on our land and all of them enjoy astonishing sea views. One party is protected from the hot sun under a roof; the other uses the shadow of a palm tree. Yet all feel happy but under a different circumstance. What is this story about?

Mangoes restaurant, located in Kuala Teriang, celebrated its two year anniversary this week. It can proudly state, that it has been well accepted and is today well established as a stable place for the homesick westerners and many tourists. Congratulations !!
The owners, Michele and Lutz, put on a delicious buffet for the forty-odd guests in attendance. Mangoes menu style is western splashed with German flavours; but for the celebrations the Aussie influence of owner Michele stepped in. Assortments of tasty BBQ treats were dished out along with complimentary drinks. Live music and singing were also included, to entertain the jovial crowd. A thoroughly enjoyable evening was had by all.
Mangoes restaurant opens Wednesday to Sunday: the kitchen opens from 6pm – 10pm.

No, no, no - the Langkawi Gazette is NOT FOR SALE
I am asked again and again if the LG was for sale. No it is not.
At some time in the past, many months ago, I thought about the future of the LG – how to expand it to the next level – and as I had nobody to help me, looked around, who could take it over.
Facts are: I found nobody who was willing to really invest the amount of time (or finance) to keep it up and expand it - BUT I found two good helpers (Kamila Delart and Teviot Fairservis).

Keeping your home and pets safe when you go away
Leaving your home, pets and garden when you go away on holiday or business can be a worry and employing the services of a house sitting agency or taking your pets to kennels could add a substantial amount to the cost of going away.

Langkawi One Earth Jazz/World Music Festival
By Patrick Low, Editor,

Being a die-hard music fan on an island with no live music except retro cover bands at hotel lounges, I was overjoyed back in October to find out that a jazz and world music festival was coming to the Frangipani resort in November, the first music festival probably since the late Ibrahim Hussain’s Langkawi International Festival of Arts back in 2000.
Repeated Tm NET Cable theft on Langkawi -
now in Kisap for the 2nd time within a week -

It has happened on other parts of the island before. There – after a few times – TM NET has simply not replaced the cables anymore. TM NET wrote to the customers “Sorry – we can not provide any service any more in your area”.
So our editor who lives in one of these areas (close to the ‘Datai Junction'), has no TM NET cable internet connection anymore, only Wifi, which is clearly slower.
