International Cooking Club
The idea is simple:
We meet once or twice a month, and each time another member of the club cooks for everybody
(if you can not cook - like me - you can join anyway).
We all share the cost of the food. The cook does not have to pay anything.
A lot of expats would like to eat the food of their own countries which they can either not find here at all or only in upscale restaurants where they pay tourist prices.
The cooking club can change that. It can also give a bigger variety of food on our table from different countries.
The membership is of course not restricted to expats. If a Chinese or Indian etc. would like to be part – that’s fine. (But it is not suited for Muslims, because it will not be halal.)

We will meet in a restaurant or in the private house of a member – whatever we can find that is suitable.
The primary idea is to meet for lunch. And probably in or around Kuah.
If we would do it in the evening, the place would be a bit less crucial.
But all these things we have to look at when we know who is interested and what is needed and wanted.
This scheme has worked fine for quite some time a few years ago in Spain, I was told.
There they met in a restaurant for lunch – and were even able to cook in this restaurant. (We should at least be able to warm up the food in the restaurant). The owner of the restaurant did sell the drinks (no one was allowed to bring his own drinks) and that was how he was compensated.
I was told that there had also been a cooking club on Langkawi a few years back already – and that it did very well. (No clue why it does not exist anymore).
So far we are still trying to find a non halal restaurant which would be interested to house us.
This cooking club could of course be extended to other things:

A lot of good stuff is available here or in KL (like good Swiss Cheese) but only affordable in big quantity.
The Cooking Club will be able to buy such things for a good price for its members, if there is enough interest.
And we will be able to share our knowledge: e.g. if things go to plan, we will soon have access to genuine, high quality German sausages, which you can not buy here – or only for a very high price (and even then you are not sure if they had been made from the right meat, stored at the right temperature etc. and are still good).
We expect to start this group with 7 or 8 people and think that it will develop to may be the double of that within a year. But that’s just our idea – we are happy to be positively surprised.

I would definitely be interested to join. How much does it cost?
Thanks Katja ! by Mark on 09 Sep 2010, 6:56 pm
At the moment we just collect the names of interested people - and then we will join and decide about everything - best if we have already a place or two where we could meet and eat.
Costs should only be for the food used everytime, shared through all who take part in this lunch (and only the cook gets it for free).
That's the idea.
We will see. :-)

Hi, Mark,
Can you add me to the list of those interested in joining the cooking club? I had a restaurant in Venezuela and once a month I had a 'Guest Cook' and it was a great success! I paid for the ingredients, the guest cook prepared the meal, and I was able to offer the meal at very reasonable prices. I really hope your idea will become a reality! Thanks for all you do!!
Thanks Katja by Mark on 14 Sep 2010, 9:20 pm
That would be a good idea. Also if you have an idea for a place... ?
Thanks Phil & Naylene by Mark on 14 Sep 2010, 9:23 pm
Thanks for the nice words.
yes - sure this will become a reality - I don't doubt it.
I have noted you two. Good to have people around with experience!!

I don't have anything firm yet, but am discussing it with a couple of people that have facilities and the space. Will keep you posted for sure!!
Thank you Naylene, by Mark on 17 Sep 2010, 4:37 pm
only ptroblem: you are on the other side of the world - eh island....
I think most of our initial people will be from around Kuah - but I might be wrong...
The thing simply is, if we do it at lunch-time, people will not come from P.Cenang to Kuah or vice versa....
Perhaps we need two locations, one in each place?
Or should we see that the planned subway between Kuah and the Underwaterworld is realised a bit faster than planned?
