City Map Discussion in the Big Apple Donuts, Jetty Point

9th of July 2010

From the about 12 business people who could be reached and who did express dissatisfaction about the quality and other aspects of the City Map Project, and promised to come, only a handful appeared at the Big Apple Donuts on the evening of the 9th of July.
Read more - many pictures !!

We believe, that most of them take it as “lesson learned” and will not proceed legal actions, as it would be very doubtful to get the money back, even if a process was won. This said, some parties expressed their intention to indeed take up legal actions.

What is this all about?
We will give you some examples, then you can make up your own mind if this chart did indeed help anybody to find your business and if putting in an ad into the City Map was worth the RM3 to 4000 . . .

Quality of the Map
1. Businesses on the chart covered up by Ads (layout problem - several)

2. Wrong Spelling (several - below 'only' one) - see if you can find it.
(About original size).

3. Unreadable small text, mainly email addresses and phone numbers (several).
These ads are in original size and very near to the original quality.

4. Unreadable logos (fully unreadable - several)

5. Businesses on the wrong places of the chart (several) and -
6. Businesses not on defined places of the chart (practically all).

Distribution
The Distribution was not made as promised in re to the date fixed. It was several weeks late.

Apart from that, there is one obvious MAJOR SHORTCOMING in the concept of this project, but which City Map openly showed in its materials – and which should have made everybody wondering:

The number of maps to be distributed on the Airport and on the Jetty Point is stated with 1000 pieces on each place. - This is for 4 months!

This number is used up in one or two days. It’s simply nothing in comparison of what is needed there. This would have been the safest way to reach the tourists.

Instead of distributing the maps there, they said that they would send thousands of maps to 85 different Embassies and to a huge list of Hotels (only few in Langkawi).
This does not make sense to me.

Why did they not distribute the maps on the Langkawi Airport and Langkawi Jetty point? The question should be asked, if it was not simply because they would of course have had to pay for the ongoing distribution . . .

There are other things that could and should be mentioned: the inaccuracy of the street layout is one of them. The other: what does a city map of Kuala Lumpur has to do in a map of Langkawi?? Obviously it was too much work for them to put in a city map of Kuah - so they just put in what they already had and instead of Kuah, they put in one of Kuala Lumpur.

Please make your own conclusions about this whole project . . .

Re: Langkawi map !
Having seen a copy of this 'map' I am horified that anyone would even consider handing this trash out to tourists !! The 'map' is just a green splodge with an outline. Most of the places and businesses are in the wrong place. The map is useless and the adverts unreadable. A partial map of KL has no place in there at all. What a load of rubbish !
This is obviously a fraud and the perpetrator should be ashamed of himself.

If you need support & references, you may put our name on the list of unhappy customers towards city map.
When I first saw a copy of the map (December - 3 months late), I tried several times to contact the company to try & resolve the issues. Finally I managed to talk to the "Local" director, as the other 2 directors (foreign nationals) were out of the country. Well the local director was plainly rude & unhelpful & basically not interested in my problem.

... I am willing to support any group action against this company, as they are giving the Malay people a bad reputation.

Kind Regards
C.

Unbelievable by Anton Azim on 17 Jul 2010, 12:43 pm

Being in a Map business my self, it may sound like a promo, but based on my experience, this map is drawn by a person that has no knowledge what so ever, about basics of graphic design, combination of colors or of any graphic programs and applications.
To me it looks like it was done on Microsoft Paint which is the most basic thing there is in any computer.
The worst part is, that it's not a first time happens in Langkawi, people get cheated by the maps again and again, but does it mean that local businesses should advertise only in one most popular map. Then it will be a monopoly, and monopoly reduces quality. The less there are competitors, the less is the service.
I'd say people should see if it's a local company or not, and see the graphic design before they pay in full. Anybody advertise should see the artwork before they pay! They are paying for the ad, they have to like it! Otherwise, what's the point of paying for something you don't want to look at? And now scam'ers look neater and neater, i mean, the City Map looked really nice until they revealed the actual product...
P.S. Look at the map: Is that a plane???

Dear Mark,
I was just checking the info on lgk-gazette and fortunately come across CITY MAP PROBLEM,actually i was one of the city map sdn bhd customer and my last advert with them cost me 10k for two box only but it was quiet unfortunate that the map was not out according to their promise. later i observed that the problem with city map was not the staff but the management and the soo called Jaya Kumar who is the main problem to this company...

Kindly pass my message to the lady bcoz I will like to offer her a better job,
it is very difficult to see a local lady working the way she was...looking at her composure she has a very good marketing background but working with wrong people..
I will be very grateful to you Mark if you can pass her to me..

Best Rgrds
Kelvin
