THE JUNGLE WALLA OF LANGKAWI
By Kamila Delart
Until quite recently, Langkawi was only a tiny dot on the map, completely unknown to the world.
That things have changed and people from all across the globe come to admire the island’s breathtaking nature is not a coincidence. Let’s pay homage to the very first naturalist of Langkawi, Irshad Mobarak, who spent the last 26 years sharing this amazing gift with travelers and locals alike.
A nature kid, Irshad spent his childhood exploring with his dad the wilderness, running with Orang Asli children through the jungle and picking up the skills of indigenous tribes when crossing hidden rainforest lakes in a dugout canoe, trying to catch a fish.
Surrounded by nature, he was completely in his element. So much so, that when asked at the age of nine about his dream job, there was only one answer that felt right: A game warden!

Newest information regarding the Langkawi Link
The Langkawi Link (LL) was a promotional print-magzine that was issued every 3 months by Patrick Low and Aini Jantan since about 6 years now. It was the only print media exclusively for Langkawi and a big help for many businesses to make their services known to the tourists.
This LL as we know it, is dead. There is no July-to-September issue coming out anymore.
BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS:
The LL will be continued by EVA ZIMMERMANN (Captain Eva from the Damai Indah Luxery Cruise) who will - as we heard - give it a big facelift, with a new, bigger format, a streamelined content, better paper and a professional layout.
The first edition is promised for September. Eva will give a presentation of the planned new magazine and her future ideas for it on Saturday the 12th of July.
If you are interested in the project, plan to possibly advertise in it and with that not only promote your own business, but also help an important Langkawi media to a good restart, then Eva will certainly give you more details about this and invite you to the presentation.
About us: Langkawi Gazette is moving into her 7th year!
For this occasion we are planning a little face-lift (coming soon).
For about 3 years now, Kamila Delart has been the Editor of LG, writing nearly all our articles, while I (Mark) put them up and manage the computer side. Langkawi Gazette has become our joint brain child, which has so far proven to be a very successful arrangement.
Our 'Guides' feature an astonishingly large number of Restaurants, Spas and Adventure Tours along with the best Resorts. They have all been personally visited and described by Kamila, which provides you with an excellent opportunity to compare and make a well informed decision.
We thought it’s about time to ‘officially’ introduce Kamila with a personal portrait in the ‘"About us" Section.

They say, there are no coincidences - and looking back at the last three years, I cannot help but agree.
Offered a Wellness Director position at one of the 5* Resorts, I had to google Langkawi - not even aware this island existed. Not that it really mattered as a career in the hospitality industry is a looong chain of short stunts and as you keep moving on, the destinations begin to blend into one another. Or that’s at least the theory :-).
Shortly before landing, I got a glimpse of the Langkawi Archipelago: Emerald green Andaman Sea strewn with tiny deserted islands. A mesmerizing view! And most likely the very moment I fell in love with our magical island…

It’s still dark outside and I wake up hearing the melodic voice of a Muezzin calling to the morning prayer. As opposed to last year when I used to pull a pillow over my head in order to reclaim my sleep, I walk out on my terrace and wait for the sun to rise - hoping to absorb the unique energy that is all around. The holy month of Ramadan began…
I didn’t know much about Islam when I came to Langkawi a few years back. And I have to admit that apart from reading a couple of books on the subject, I didn’t make much effort to truly change that. But Muhammad’s teachings have a way to get underneath your skin - whether you are aware of it or not. Especially if you live on the outskirts of a traditional Malay kampong…

When a shop flourishes for nearly two decades despite a location away from the busy tourism spots, you can be sure the shopping experience is worth the trip across the island! The 10.000 square feet one-stop handicraft & art gallery lures with sophisticated presentation and an exquisite selection of antiques and handicraft personally sourced by the owners all across Asia. Intrigued? Wait until you hear the stories that surround some of the rare objects you will find in De’ Zone!
Looking for truly original gifts for your loved ones back home? One store you absolutely have to visit is the recently opened GALLERY of SOPAN SANTUN KLASIK! Just make sure you have a few more banknotes in your valet than you plan to spend. Then once you set your eyes on the unique handbags, pillow covers and table runners, you can impossibly resist purchasing some of these beautiful products for yourself as well!!! Which is very much how the story of SOPAN SANTUN KLASIK started: A pillow designed to decorate the homey sofa of the entrepreneurial couple, Mr. Noor Baba and Ms. Nurul Fisha, ‘walked out of the door’ with the first visiting friends. As the table runner met with the same fate, the question was not whether to set up a business but merely how to go about it.

Aromatic, juicy, flavorsome… For thousands of years a source of desire, tropical fruits inspired poets, unleashed love affairs, fueled discovery voyages and triggered battles and wars. A tale of craving and delight you will understand the moment you peel the bristly skin of a rambutan, unveiling the exquisite flesh inside. The second you taste a freshly harvested mangosteen or let a piece of ripe durian melt on your tongue…
The humid tropical climate and fertile land of our island nurtures an incredible variety of fruit species - whether cultivated in orchards or harvested in their natural habitat, the rainforest. An amazing opportunity to experience a myriad of tantalizing flavors! Just visit one of the many local wet markets and indulge in the mouth-watering tree-ripened fruits. Overwhelmed by the countless choices? A little wary of trying the unfamiliar? Let us introduce some of the local favorites…
Named after its appearance (rambut means in Malay hair), the RAMBUTAN is coated with a soft hairy skin. Easy to peel off, the rind protects a tender, semi-translucent flesh with a grape-like texture and sour-sweet, aromatic taste.

Initiator and one of the main sponsors of the KILIM KARST MASSIVE MANGROVE CLEANING that took place in March 2014, the ROTARY CLUB OF LANGKAWI does its best to encourage young Langkawians to take ownership and see themselves as the guardians of the island’s pristine nature.
Aiming to get young participants to reflect upon the event and share their thoughts and impressions with others, they organized with the support of LADA a literary and photography contest. As you can see and read below, their initiative was truly successful! We congratulate the winners and applaud the Rotary Club of Langkawi!

A Day With the Rubbish
Masses of people swarm around a few sign-up tables in the parking lot near the Kilim boat docks. Everyone is talking and I am just standing there, shocked. To see so many people gathered in one place for such a cause is amazing. I could hardly believe the crowds of people, young and old, who had come to help give back to the earth by helping to clean her shores. The lines trailed through the parking lot, and it was hard to find where one ended and where another began. After I got my number, I wandered around noting how many people had come from around the island.
