In the Bass Harbor - in
front of Kuah Town
- If you choose this option - which many yachts do -
be aware of two things:
- The anchor ground is not ideal. There are patches
where your anchor could not hold in a 40knots gust.
- Do not anchor too near to the ferries. Within the
last year I witnessed twice that a ferry got loose from
it's mooring and did damage another boat. One of those
was my ex-boat (Power of Now).
- You can go with your dinghy to the little jetty (Jeti
Pelancongan) where there is normally enough space to tie
up properly to a floating plastic-pontoon.
- In the past RM 3 per day was asked for to do so. At
the moment, no one pays - but a new director was
appointed to this huge unused complex, so we we will
have to wait and see.
- There is also a shower/toilet - available, possibly,
in this complex.
- You can also go with your dinghy to the Royal
Langkawi Yacht Club - but have to pay RM 8.- per day
just as a 'dinghy landing fee'. The Secretary at the
RLYC Desk obviously didn't feel to good in having to
confirm that - and I know they do not enforce it every
time. But it's the rule...
- I know someone who paid these RM 8 for several
months - every day. They did not allow him to pay per
week or month. He had to go every day on his crutches
(he is disabled in walking from an accident) to the RLYC
desk and pay his 8 Ringits :-)
- In this amount the shower is NOT included. Shower
costs you RM 5 a day extra.
- Those wanting Wifi facilities out in the Bay (Bass Harbour) will also have to pay RM 35 per month to RLYC.
The connection does not reach out in the whole bay!
- Check first!

On Moorings in the Bass Harbor
Only a few moorings are
available. They are a bit far away from the few ideal dinghy
landing points, specially at low tide.
From RM 250 a month.

If
there is space along the 'Mega Yacht Pier', they
will put the cats there and charge the same price as

But if they have
to put the cat in a 'Finger-Berthing' they charge
1.4 times the price for a Mono!!

If you have a cat and are on a budget - it might
be very worth wile to first enquire, if they have
the space to charge your Cat like a mono (and for
how long . . . ) ! This may make the difference of
about RM 500 per month. |

Just outside Telaga Harbour behind the
artificial sand islands,
planted with big Trees
From there you can go with the
dinghy to the Telaga Marina. No 'Landing Fees'.
Shower costs: RM 5 per
day and 20 per week (free if you are in the Marina)
Wifi: RM 5 per day, 18
per week and 30 per month (free in the Marina)
There are many more locations,
like 'Rebak-Marina', the 'Hole in the Wall', etc. etc. - But the above mentioned two
areas are probably the main locations for a boat just
arriving - as you will have to clear in - which you can do
only at these two points: at the Main Jetty near Kuah
and in Telaga.
Then the best thing is
probably, that you get yourself the book 'Sail Thailand',
if you don't have it yet. In it's 4th edition it includes
Langkawi and the Mergui Archipelago. It's a great book and
practically a MUST for every sailor around here.
This book you can buy for RM 65.- e.g. at S.K. Intertrade in
Kuah Town.
The book is high quality
printing with a lot of glossy pictures - but the binding is
very poor. It will fall apart within a short time. S.K.
Intertrade does re-bind it for you straight away when you
buy it, with a perfectly fitting spiral binding - for free!
Just ask them.

Clearing In and Out |
 |
| |
|
|
| |
|
Clearing
in to Langkawi is easy, no hassle, and free of
charge.
The Officials are helpful and will
not ask you for money.
If you have been in Thailand before and had a bad experience
there - relax. :-
If you come in near Kuah, you go to the Main Jetty (where the
ferries go to Kuala Kedah, Kuala Perlis, Satun, etc.)
If you approach Langkawi near Telaga Harbour,
you clear in to Telaga.
(The headquarter of Immigration is there in Telaga).
Clearing in in Kuah:
The right sequence to go is:
1. Harbor Master
2. Customs
3. Immigration
All 3 are in the same building: In the Jetty Point Komplex
near Kuah, a short distance from the RLYC - and easy to reach
with a dinghy from the Kuah Bay:
Opening Times of the Harbor Master (Port Office Kuah)
In the Jetty Point, first floor:
|
Sunday to Thursday |
07.30 to 13.00
and 14.00 to 17.30
|
|
Friday & Saturday |
08.00 to 12.15
and 14.45 to 18.00 |
The stay in Langkawi for the boat is not limited
and is free of charge (if under 15 BRT). If more you pay a
one time 'Port-Handling Fee' of RM 5.-
Citizens of most western countries will get a visa for 3 months.

Clearing in in Telaga:
Same sequence - Harbor Master, Customs, Immigration
- and all three are again in the same building at the Marina.
Water and Fuel |

|
Water and Fuel |
 |
| |
|
|
| |

Water is normally free in a Marina
(not so Electricity).
If you are not in a marina with your boat, you will have to
pay a small fee for the Water.
Diesel and Petrol in the RLYC
Many sailors who have rented a car, take
their empty canisters and go to the Petrol Station to fill them
up.
You can also go by taxi. If the taxi driver tells you
that he is not allowed to do so - you have to take another
taxi. The taxi association does NOT forbid the drivers to
transport your fuel (Info 21st February 2008).
The problem in doing so is that you in fact do
something illegal.
The diesel at the
petrol station is about 1 RM cheaper
than the one at the Yacht Club (or out on the barge in Kuah
Bay) - because it is subsidised. It is subsidised for
the road traffic - and the diesel at the Yacht Club or from
the (Shell) barge in Kuah Bay - is not subsidised. That's
the difference.
If you want to be able to buy cheap
diesel legally, you
should go to the Lada Building (Langkawi Development
Authority) and ask for a special letter to allow you to get
a certain amount of subsidised diesel.
I am not yet sure if it works and under which
conditions, if so. I will try to find out.
I asked the beautiful Chinese
lady at the Shell
station, if they would stop a yachtie from filling up his
canisters - and I just got a smile. So probably they will
not interfere - but they might.

Petrol
You can not get
petrol at the RLYC - nor on the barge in Kuah Bay.
If you are situated in the RLYC and need
petrol - you go
with your dinghy to the little place beside the YC, where
the small boats depart to the other islands. (The place is
between the RLYC and the Main Jetty).
As these boats now mainly
have outboards (and
only a few still have a longtail), they need petrol too. So
every morning they organize a truck full of canisters with
petrol and they will sell to you. You should be there
between 9.00 and 11.00 in the morning. Before that time the
petrol has
not yet arrived - and afterwards they might be out of stock
already :-)

Diesel and Petrol in TELAGA
In the Marina you have both: DIESEL and PETROL.
The fueling station belongs to the nearby 'Petronas'
Petrol Station.
Diesel price today (23
Feb 08) was RM 2.52 - exactly
the same as in the RLYC.
Petrol costs the same as in the
petrol station: 1.92
If you go with your canisters to the
petrol station to
fill up with subsidised diesel - they will charge you the
same amount as in the Marina.

We will give more specific data soon.
For the moment look in the Langkawi-Directory under
'Chandleries' and 'Marine Services'.
Note: If you want to engage someone for doing repairs
(of any kind) on your boat, you should ask the person to
give you some references (name you some people he has worked for
which are still around and can be questioned about him) and you
should agree upon the costs of the job before any work is started.
This applies for anyone, including and especially EXPATS !
There have
been pretty unpleasant events in the recent past.
This is the reason why I feel this advice is
necessary. You could otherwise end up with a job badly done and a bill in USDs
(instead of RM) amounting to about 3 or 4 times more than one would
consider to be a fair price. GET A WRITTEN QUOTATION!!!!
If you are in doubt, ask us. We do not know every one and can
not give you any guarantee - but we can warn you from those we
know ... :-)
