Malaysia's former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has proposed to turn Langkawi International Shooting Range Malaysia (LISRAM) into a tourist destination.
Built in 1997 over a 202 hectare site at a cost of RM80 million, Lisram is located on LISRAM Highway, a major highway in Langkawi. It was built for the Commonwealth Games hosted by Malaysia in 1998. It is facilitated with state-of-the-art equipment and electronic scoring system, and it was known as the best shooting range in South East Asia. The shooting ranges includes 10m range, 25m range, 50m range, Clay Target ranges and 1,000 yard fullbore range.
Dr. Mahathir had said that there might be many who would be interested among the 2.3 millions tourists to Langkawi to include shooting activites during their visits.
"Just that currently, LISRAM's calendar is full with various activities, especially training and competitions organised by various enforcement agencies," Lisram manager Mohd Nor told Bernama corresponding to Dr. Mahathir's suggestion in his blog that Listam be made into a tourist spot.
