PrintE-mail Happy Birthday at SUNSUTRA

Sunsutra - Langkawi Gazette25 November 2008, Tuesday

10th September was Wei Jian's 24th birthday. A week before his big day, I made an appointment at Sunsutra for two. While on the phone with the staff, I kindly requested to write WJ's name on a cake which the staff voluntarily said would be prepared specially for us on that very night.

Entrance to Sunsutra - Langkawi Gazette

Walking into the restaurant was a familiar experience because I remembered vividly that I celebrated my 20th birthday with my friends at this fine restaurant. The walk into the building was magical as I knew the meal would be as delightful as the previous one.

Located in Pantai Tengah, Sunsutra is a fine dining restaurant that should not be missed. It was its avant-garde interior, innovative cuisine, and relaxed atmosphere got me going back for more.

Table, Sunsutra - Langkawi Gazette

As we were ushered to our table by a warm and friendly wait staff, I was surprised to see our table had been nicely set up with lovely tablecloth, candles, and a vase with decorative twigs. They were so thoughtful to have greeted us with such well-prepared table.

Apple Juice, Sunsutra - Langkawi Gazette

Apple Juice

WJ had a glass of Apple Juice, which came with a thick slice of green apple as a decoration.

Orange Juice, Sunsutra - Langkawi Gazette

Orange Juice

I had Orange Juice that I found quite sourish.

Rye Bread, Sunsutra - Langkawi Gazette

Rye Bread and Grissini

After our order had been taken, we were first served with a complimentary starter of Rye Bread and Breadsticks alongside with their special homemade salsa and soft butter. The salsa had a unique blend of tomatoes, onions and chillis, which 'wowed' my tastebuds. Besides, the breads were fresh too.

Caesar Salad, Sunsutra - Langkawi Gazette

Caesar Salad

While waiting for our mains, we had Caesar Salad as appetizer. In a crispy bowl-like pastry, found fresh Romaine lettuce tossed in a creamy garlic and Parmesan dressing, and topped with crisp bread croutons and thinly sliced Parmesan cheese. It's one of the best Caesar Salad I had! The dressing was simply appetizing.

Lamb Shank, Sunsutra - Langkawi Gazette

Lamb Shank

WJ decided on Lamb Shank for his main. It was a truly hearty meal with stewed lamb, which was perfectly seasoned and smothered with gravy; served with a medley of vegetables and mashed potatoes. The lamb shank was beautifully tender and it fell apart in my mouth almost instantly. Not to mention that the gravy was a perfect pair with the meat and the vegetables were well-cooked.

Barracuda with Zcchini Blanket, Sunsutra - Langkawi Gazette

Barracuda in Zucchini Blanket

I went for this dish not because I wanted to have barracuda, but it's because I was attracted by its interesting name. Langkawi fresh barracuda, grilled then baked, and wrapped with sliced zucchini; served with crunchy sweet peas, juicy cherry tomatoes and mashed potatoes on the side. Splendidly presented, the barracuda was being rested in a pool of bright red coloured gravy, propped up against the creamy mashed potatoes. The fish was grilled and baked till perfection, with crispy edges and tender inner part. Loved it!

Sunsutra is a great restaurant that serves a wonderful array of international and local Asian flavours in their menu selection. Their dishes are competitively priced and the ambience is very romantic and relaxed. A perfect place for couples to spend their quality time together over a delightful meal, or maybe over a drink or two. I was glad to see my effort had paid off, that is by putting a smile on WJ's face =)
